Is The Chiefs Offense Really That Old?

sports nfl priest holmes airborne The Chiefs offense sounds like a Viagra ad in the making.

The entire offense isn't that old... just the offensive line. Willie Roaf (LT) is 35, Casey Wiegmann (C) is 32, and Will Shields (RG) is 34. But also consider that Brian Waters (LG) is only 28, and Jordan Black (RT) is even younger at 25. Take a look at the receiving core too. Eddie Kennison is getting up there at 32, but Sammy Parker is 24, Dante Hall is 27, Chris Horn is 28, and Marc Boerigter (who is way under utilized) is only 27. Granted, the face of the offense is Trent Green, who is 36... but quarterbacks can have much longer careers than your typical offensive linemen. What about running back? Sure Priest Holmes is getting up there, but Larry Johnson is doing fantastically in his place and he's only 26. Tony Gonzalez is only 29, and he's having a pro bowl season again this year with no signs of slowing.

The Offensive Blame Game

sports football priest holmes Good analysis of late game play by the Chiefs:

There’s nothing scientific about a gut feeling, but the Chiefs’ fourth quarter offense seems to play every play out of desperation. They seem to throw every ball downfield with a sense of urgency. Contrast this approach to the Patriots. Is it true that Brady has that much cooler of a head than Trent Green? Or is it just possible that Brady’s confidence in the Patriots’ defense allows him to take less risks, be more conservative and, in the end, make less mistakes? Is it just possible that Brady’s mistakes are covered up by a defense that can make stops when it needs to? Trent Green feels like he needs to score a touchdown on every play late in the game; Brady does not. Just as importantly, it almost seems like the Chiefs are afraid to use Priest Holmes when the game is on the line. Whereas earlier in the game, the Chiefs are not afraid to pound the defense with a heavy dosage of runs, they seem almost skittish to try that late in the game. When Priest gets shut down on first down, they shy away from the run. Once again, this applies to the sense of urgency.

Is A No Name Football Team Better?

football priest holmes running How much to pay for your team is always a tough coaching and marketing decision.

These days, it seems easier to be successful with a no-name offense than a no-name defense, a fact that seems to escape the Chiefs in the Vermeil era. Trent Green, Dante Hall, Priest Holmes, et al, are all wondrously gifted and productive talents, but is there any reason to expect that the end result this season will be different than the last three?

Emmitt Smith Retires

football emmitt smith smiling Who will look better in the history books: Emmitt Smith or Priest Holmes.

I don’t know. I have a hard time putting him in the same category as the elite hall of fame caliber backs. He had a nice long consistent career. I just don’t think he was the same kind of natural graceful runner that Eric Dickerson was for example. Or Marcus Allen, or Priest Holmes, or Earl Campbell. Well, okay, Earl had the grace of a water buffalo, but something that big moving that fast has its own aesthetic, so who’s to say it ain’t grace?

Fantasy Football: Time to put some studs out to pasture

football priest holmes Is Priest Holmes really all washed up?

Priest Holmes, once the perennial darling of fantasy football owners may just be done. I know that I have no interest in using my first round pick on him. Holmes is still super-human in terms of field vision, and instinct but I just feel that his age and injuries are finally going to catch up with him this season. Marshall Faulk, for so many years considered the most complete offensive football player in the league has lost his starting position to young rising star Steven Jackson. Faulk’s and Holmes’ decline in fantasy football marks the rise of a new generation of fantasy superstars. For likely the first time in years Faulk will probably not be taken in the first two rounds of most fantasy drafts. Holmes probably will be a top round choice but I would be wary of injury.
